Colleen Kirby

Ms. Kirby earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Delaware, where she majored in Criminal Justice and participated in the Honors Program. She later attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, where she concentrated on litigation and advocacy. Graduating cum laude and winning an award for academic excellence, she earned her JD while ranking in the top 20% of her class. After passing the bar exam, she became licensed to practice law in the state of Maryland that same year.

Following law school, Ms. Kirby served as a clerk to the Honorable Joseph F. Murphy, Jr. When she began her clerkship, Judge Murphy was the Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. During the course of her time under the judge, Judge Murphy was appointed to the Maryland Court of Appeals, where Ms. Kirby completed the term of her clerkship.

Before entering private practice, Ms. Kirby spent over two years working as an assistant state’s attorney for Howard County. She became a skilled trial lawyer by handling a variety of criminal and traffic cases for the state of Maryland. In November of 2008, Ms. Kirby successfully completed the Trial Advocacy Program sponsored by the Maryland State’s Attorneys Association.

Ms. Kirby is a member of the Maryland Criminal Defense Attorney’s Association, Maryland State Bar Association, and the Howard County Bar Association. She is also a member of the National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 under 40, which is a professional organization comprised of America’s top young trial attorneys. This is by invitation only, and membership is extended exclusively to those individuals who meet stringent qualifications and specialize in the legal practice of criminal defense or civil plaintiff.

One of Ms. Kirby’s main passions is educating the public about the truth behind pit bulls and dispelling the reputation depicted by the media. She rescued her first pit bull mix from the Humane Society five years ago. After the Court of Appeals recent ruling in Tracey v. Solesky, she decided to add another pit bull to her family.

As a Maryland criminal defense attorney, Colleen Kirby serves Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Harford County, and Prince George’s County.
